Jobs for April

Gardening Tasks for April: Spring into Action

April is when the garden really starts to gather momentum. Warmer days, longer evenings, and increasing soil temperatures make it one of the busiest and most rewarding months in the gardening calendar. With growth accelerating, it’s time to get planting, preparing, and staying on top of emerging jobs.

Planting & Sowing
April is ideal for sowing a wide range of seeds outdoors, including carrots, beetroot, parsnips, and lettuce. Under cover, continue sowing tender crops like tomatoes, courgettes, and sweetcorn. You can also plant early potatoes and begin hardening off young plants on milder days.

Lawn Care
Growth picks up this month, so regular mowing begins—start with a higher cut and gradually lower it as the season progresses. Apply a spring lawn feed to encourage lush, green growth, and tackle weeds or moss as needed.

Borders & Beds
Borders will be coming to life, so keep on top of weeds while they’re small. Apply a mulch of compost or bark to help retain moisture and improve soil health. Divide and replant overcrowded perennials to keep them vigorous and flowering well.

Fruit & Veg
Plant out onion sets, shallots, and early vegetables. Protect blossoms on fruit trees from late frosts where possible. It’s also a good time to feed fruit bushes and trees to support a strong growing season.

Greenhouse & Pots
Your greenhouse will be filling up quickly now. Keep it well-ventilated on sunny days to prevent overheating, and water seedlings carefully to avoid damping off. Pot on young plants as they grow and begin preparing containers and hanging baskets.

Pruning & Maintenance
Prune early-flowering shrubs after they finish blooming to encourage fresh growth. Tie in climbing plants and check supports before growth gets too vigorous. Keep tools clean and sharp as jobs increase.

Wildlife & General Care
Pollinators are becoming more active, so include nectar-rich flowers in your planting plans. Keep bird feeders and water topped up, and be mindful of nesting birds when working around hedges and trees.

Final Thoughts
April is a month of energy and optimism in the garden. With a bit of regular effort—sowing, feeding, and tidying—you’ll set the stage for a vibrant and productive season ahead.

There’s plenty to do, but also plenty to enjoy—spring colour, fresh growth, and the promise of everything still to come.
