Jobs for February

February is an ideal time to tackle a variety of gardening tasks to prep for the growing season. Lets get started!

Begin by cutting down deciduous ornamental grasses that have been left standing through winter, ensuring fresh shoots can emerge.

After snowdrops and winter aconites finish blooming, divide their clumps for new colonies. For clematis, prune late-summer varieties back to healthy buds, while also dividing congested herbaceous perennials for robust new plants.

If any deciduous shrubs are misaligned in your garden, now is the perfect time to transplant them while they are still dormant.

Enhance your patio or garden beds by potting containers with hardy spring bedding plants like primroses, wallflowers, and forget-me-nots. Additionally, prune winter-blooming shrubs like mahonia and jasmine after they finish flowering.

For wisteria, cut side shoots back to three buds to promote a flourishing display, and trim powerful shrubs like buddleja and elder to keep them manageable.

Don’t forget to check climbing plants like ivy and Virginia creeper, giving them a trim before nesting season. Lastly, remove old foliage from epimediums and sprinkle slow-release fertiliser around the bases of your roses and flowering shrubs to ensure they thrive.
