Epiphyllum pumilum, often called the White Orchid Cactus or Crenate Orchid Cactus, is an epiphytic member of the cactus family native to the tropical rainforests of Central America, especially Mexico and Guatemala. Valued both for its elegant growth habit and its highly fragrant blooms, it is a striking plant in cultivation.
Instead of true leaves, this cactus develops flat, elongated green stems with gently notched or scalloped edges. These stems perform the work of photosynthesis while also storing water, allowing the plant to thrive in its native habitat.
The highlight of Epiphyllum pumilum is undoubtedly its flowers. In late spring to early summer, the plant produces large, funnel-shaped blossoms up to 8 inches (20 cm) long. Opening at night and fading by the following morning, the blooms are white to cream with golden-yellow centers and release a rich, sweet fragrance into the evening air.
